Golf Week – 2nd June to 9th June
What a week! The weather was unpredictable to say the least with Monday morning’s rounds all cancelled after an amazingly unseasonable downpour closed the course to play until midday. Many players, myself included, could not find a time to play later in the day and had to miss out on the Flag competition. The juniors Flag competition was won by Marijke Rapley,

Old Salts 14 June 2012.
Congratulations are due to Brian Daw who was announced as the winner of the Winter section of the “Six of the Best” competition. Well done Brian.
In the latest round of the Summer section of the above competition the placings were:
1st. Gwyn Oakley with a fine 40 points, 2nd. John Dowle 39 points,3rd. Andrew Pout also with 39 points.
In the Captain’s Challenge the Captain, Brian Best and his Vice captain, Colin Chapman took on a formidable challenge from the brothers Ted and Roger Backhouse. Colin played a solid game but the result was still a win for the “Backhouse Boys” by 4 and 2.
The Whitstable and Seasalter “Old Salts” played two interclub matches this week.
Whitstable played at home on Monday 18th. against a visiting side from Chestfield. The result was an excellent 5/3 win for the Old Salts.
However, when the Old Salts played at Belmont (Faversham) on Thursday 21st. the tables were turned with Faversham giving the visitors a bloody nose with a 7/1 win.
Win or loose, the Old Salts appreciate the amicable nature of the matches and the hospitality extended to them by their hosts in the away fixtures.
On Monday 25th. June Whitstable & Seasalter Old Salts continued their run of away match losses when they lost 5-3 at St. Augustines. The home team of “Saints and Sinners” won by 5-3.
On Thursday 28th. June the Old Salts played a medal competition for the Hugh Ridley Trophy. Conditions were sunny and dry. The result were: In third place Terry Suggett with a net 63, Clive Witten was second with net 62, but lost on countback to Dave Morgan who took the trophy.

June Report
This year’s ex servicemen’s trophy saw a welcome return to form for David Morgan. Two birdies and eight pars helped him to finish winner on the day with 42 points. This was just too good for John Shepherd who had to settle for second place with 41 points and Tommy Burns with 39 points.
During the Club Vs Old Salts match, Brian Best was unable to play due to injury and could only sit on the sidelines watching his team struggle in almost every match. John Wegner’s team proved too strong on the day and finished as clear winners. Despite the result this event proved very popular again following its reintroduction last as part of the centenary programme.
The first “London Pride” Stableford competition ended with John Wegner as the clear winner following a brilliant 41 points. Not noted as a beer drinker he may have been tempted to give his prize to Tommy Burns who finished as runner up again with 39 points. John Stokes took third place from Mark Payne on count back after both players finished on 38 points.
Kent Veterans’ Golf Matches Captain Rod Wood
Secretary Don Crawford
Midweekers Section Captain Bob Ireland Vice Captain Peter Shearing
Secretary Eynon Price
Wednesday 13th June The Peter Hadlow June Cup Medal
The captain’s challenge match-a hard fought affair ended all square with Bob Ireland and Peter Shearing fighting off the efforts of Ted Backhouse and Martin Newton to overturn their recent defeat by one hole in the previous challenge.
Tommy Burns won with an excellent 65 winning on countback from Des Barker in second and Dave Chalk in third one stroke behind.
Brian Sealy won the charity sweep, Dave Swann second and Fred Lynn third.
There was only one birdie prize won on the 6th by Brian McNally.
Friday 22nd June The Dave King Cup Stableford
The captain’s challenge won in great style by Don Crawford and Tommy Burns, Don playing well in the first nine although we were 1 up going into the 10th. Tommy as usual turned on his “A” game and we ended up losing 4 and 2!
Val Bayliss won the day with 38 points, Brian McNally second with 35 winning on countback from Dave Chalk.
Terry Bills took the first place in the charity sweep, a rollover for second and Brian McNally third. The distinct lack of birdies showed how hard the course was playing as did the low scores returned.
Super Seniors
Dates for the coming year of events:
July26…………………………………Away to Broome Park August14…………………………….Home to North Foreland September13……………………….Away to North Foreland.
To be eligible to play for the Super Seniors see below:- The Super Seniors League is one of three run under the auspices of the Society of Kent Golf Veterans. Age requirement is to be aged 70 or over and to play off a 21 handicap or better. Whitstable are in League C, comprising for this season of Broome Park, Canterbury, North Foreland and, Chestfield (a new entrant this year after St Augustine’s dropped out at the end of last season) and ourselves. There is and end-of-season play-off with group A and B usually around mid-September. But no worries, we never aspire to such grandiose exposure Dress for all games is informal afterwards, with a bite and a coffee normally a fiver before tee-off, usually at 1pm. Team requirement is now eight players with notices posted on the Kent Vets notice board in good time for the next match. If anyone has any questions about the Super Seniors, please contact organiser Alec Parrett, on 01843 600887 or by email at alvipar@talktalk.net.
After a savaging at Chestfield when our Super 70s went down four games to nil – their first whitewash of this season- they entertained Canterbury on June 26 at Whitstable to gain a 2 ½- 1 ½ win. Dave Lambert and Ron Fuller, together with Tony Taunton and Andrew Pout got maximum points, while David Dale and Bob McCormick were just caught on the eighteenth to bring home the half. Whitstable are now mid-table with 27 points in League C, just one point from North Foreland and four behind Canterbury on 31. Our Super Seniors go to Broome Park on July 26 (just one point behind us on 26, so this is a needle match) having beaten them at home 2 ½ – 1 ½ in May.

June’s puzzle
Question: In a stroke-play competition, A, B and C were drawn by the Committee to play together starting at 9 am. A and B were present at the appointed time. C arrived at 9:02 after A and B had played from the teeing ground, but just in time to play in the correct order. What is the ruling?
Answer:
As C arrived and was ready to play within five minutes after his starting time, he incurred a penalty of two strokes for failure to start at the time established by the Committee (Rule 6 – 3a) If C had arrived more than five minutes after his starting time, the penalty would have been disqualification. In either case if the Committee determines that exceptional circumstances had prevented C from starting on time, there is no penalty.
All competitors in a group must be present and ready to play at the time established by the Committee, in this case 9:00 am.
The order of play is not relevant (Revised).
