It is with great sadness that we heard of the recent deaths of both these longtime members of the club.
Jeff Green had been Captain and President and despite his increasingly frail health preventing him playing golf for several years, was a keen crib player on a Thursday afternoon. He loved a pint or two with his crib cronies and will be missed by us all.
John Whorlow also passed away and will be greatly missed by Les Biggs, Dave Rigden, and Mike Calthrop who were his regular Sunday Morning fourball partners.

18th November Captains Drive In
The day all the Captains begin their captaincy, there’s a prize for the person who picks the nearest length of each drive in all categories, Mens, Ladies, Old Salts and Juniors. Get your ticket now to avoid disappointment!
15th December Christmas Party
Les Biggs with his mighty Wurlitzer will provide entertainment. Cost is £5.00 and food will be available at an extra £7.00 per person. Menu will be displayed in the clubhouse nearer the event. Dress code is smart casual.
22nd December Children’s Christmas Party
I am only sorry I cannot attend this function and receive my present from a thinly disguised Mike Behr as Santa but advanced age precludes me.
The kids however will be thrilled!
New Years Eve
This years party will follow the format of previous years with a 3 course sit down meal followed by musical entertainment from Full Circle, dancing to midnight and fireworks to celebrate the New Year.
Dress code is Black Tie or Lounge Suit, Ladies will wear their most glamorous outfits as usual!
Price to be confirmed later, watch out for further details.
Burns Night 26th January
Always a popular event, the details will be posted on the club notice board 4 weeks before, do not miss this! A deposit will be required from each person booking at the time of booking to ensure fairness, as the night is always sold out!
Dress code is formal Lounge suits or Kilts if applicable.
Fun and Frolics at Leeds Castle!
It was an unpromising start as we arrived in a torrential downpour at Leeds Castle, the course was open but wet and getting wetter, however after some refreshments, provided by our sous chef Eynon, the rain stopped, the sun came out and off we went.
The course was as lovely as usual but very wet with most fairways covered in worm casts, all of us were taller when we left the course and some serious trolley cleaning was called for!
The day was won by Steve Wood with a score of 35 points, Beryl Wingrove won the Ladies competition with 33 points, the Team Prize was won by Ian Wingrove, Beryl Wingrove and Mike Harrison with a combined adjusted score (as they were a 3 ball) of 112.
Booze, Blues and Clues
Friday 9th November
The Back Street Bloozers will entertain you to an evening of blues music, the band features our own Ted Backhouse beating the skins, while you puzzle out the answers to the captains quiz!
Teams of eight will be provided with a delicious platter of nibbles produced by the masterly hands of Tony Love.
The price for this unmissable evening is £10.00 per head.
The list will be put on the noticeboard in the clubhouse soon, do not miss this event, get your teams together, prizes for the winning team!

The website has been revamped and there are still some small problems to sort out. The Old Salts Captain Brian Best Vice Captain Colin Chapman Secretary George Bawden
On Monday 1st. October Whitsable & Seasalter Old Salts held their Past Captains competition in showery conditions. The format was Stableford and the competition consisted of two sections, those wishing to complete eighteen holes and those preferring to play only nine. The winner of the eighteen hole section was a very on form John Shepherd with 36 points. The nine hole section was won by Geoff. Hughes with a comendable16 points.
Thursday 4th. October saw the Old Salts playing friedly four balls. In his last competition as the Old Salts Captain Brian Best played with his Vice-Captain, Colin Chapman, in the Captain’s Challenge. The challengers this week were Gwyn Oakley and Colin Holton. The Captain was hoping to go out in a blaze of glory, but glory favoured the Challengers who won by the considerable margin of 4/3.

The month started off with the Daily Mail Foursomes competition on the 2nd ,with a depleted field as it clashed with Faversham’s Open and Invitation day. At Faversham, Pat Bensted flew the Whitstable flag by being a member of the team that came 3rd on countback. Back at home, the foursomes competition was won by Judy Butcher and Penny Kinnersley with 35 points.
On the 9th, the Stableford was won by Holly Butler,32 points, followed by Fran Price,31 and Jackie Witten,31.
A bevy of 45 beauties including guests; Lady Captain and Secretary of Chestfield, sat down to the Ladies Supper on the 11th, with a delicious meal produced by Tony, and a devilish quiz on the table, courtesy of the Lady Vice Captain, Jackie Witten. Least said about that the better, maybe, as the brain cells were sorely tested. The winners were Mel Bashford and her team, which happened to be our esteemed guests from Chestfield !

On the 16th a field of over twenty ladies played a medal round and were blown around the course, with the windy weather the ultimate winner, when everyone returned, exhausted , to the clubhouse for revival by Tony’s food ! Beryl Wingrove got the best score, 75 net, but couldn’t believe that that score was the top one ! Mel Bashford was next, with net 76 and the lowest gross score, then Molly Furlong, 77.
The stableford on the 23rd didn’t happen because of the weather, but luckily things improved for the next day, which was the captain’s away day, held at Faversham. Twelve ladies had a lovely day; the course looked wonderful with its’ autumn tinge. The lucky winner was Alison Wreford, followed by Pat Bensted, then Janet Henley . Pat also had the longest drive, and Shirley Dalton was nearest the pin on the 16th.
There was a bit of trouble with direction finding on the way round with the ladies in buggies. Judy Butcher was heard in the visitor’s car park asking for the way to Carlisle, as they struggled to negotiate a path from green to tee. They made it back to the clubhouse in time for the meal, so all was well in the end.
The competition on the 30th was cancelled due to the funeral of Jeff Green; those not involved went out to try the course but found it very boggy and could only laugh their way round, being thankful that no scores were to be recorded. Not a good start to the winter.

Golf Report for Sunday mornings – October
Tommy Burns finished with a fantastic net 58 in the October Medal competition to finish outright winner by one shot from Andy Watkins. Despite double bogies on holes eight and nine, Tommy showed his true class with eleven pars and two birdies elsewhere to secure his win. Club Captain John Wegner performed as consistently as ever to secure third place with a net sixty-three.
Jonathan Whorlow (Jnr) showed he is back as a force to be reckoned with, when he finished winner of the recent Sunday morning Stableford competition with forty-two points. Richard Davis, with forty-one points took second place and Ronnie Rumble with forty points ended in third position.
Only a small number of eligible medal winners were available for the Medal Winners cup. However, Richard Smith finished strongly to take the title with a net 67 ahead on count back from Mark Pierce who finished with double bogies on the last two holes.

Wednesday 10th October The Ray Thomas Cup Medal
The captain’s challenge from Dave Morgan and Bob McCormick was won by them 2&1after a difficult match made harder by some diabolical putting by everybody!
Tony Lavender won the competition with a net 64, second Trevor Croxton with 65 beating Don Williams into third on countback.
Roger Bryant, Tony Lavender, Bob Ireland, Anthony Callaghan, Anthony Wright, John Williams and Rob Davis won birdie prizes. The charity sweep was won by Ian Burton, second Ian Horton, with third as a rollover.
Friday 26th October Dave Rosendale Sorcerer’s Trophy was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and will be rescheduled to Friday 2nd November.
Super Seventies

To be eligible to play for the Super Seniors see below:- The Super Seniors League is one of three run under the auspices of the Society of Kent Golf Veterans. Age requirement is to be aged 70 or over and to play off a 21 handicap or better. Whitstable are in League C, comprising for this season of Broome Park, Canterbury, North Foreland and, Chestfield (a new entrant this year after St Augustine’s dropped out at the end of last season) and ourselves. There is and end-of-season play-off with group A and B usually around mid-September. But no worries, we never aspire to such grandiose exposure Dress for all games is informal afterwards, with a bite and a coffee normally a fiver before tee-off, usually at 1pm. Team requirement is now eight players with notices posted on the Kent Vets notice board in good time for the next match. This fundraising venture costs £1 per month, with monthly prizes of £30, £20 and £15. There is a bonus double draw at Christmas each year. You’ve got to be in it to win it!

Here are a few more thoughts on golf
When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.
There are two kinds of bounces; unfair bounces and bounces just the way you meant to play it.
You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of the time and a two-inch branch 90% of the time.
If you want to hit a 7 iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.
There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one in wearing the glove.
