Message from President Derek Bates
I would like to start by congratulating Jon Perkins on taking up his position as the new club captain and I wish him and Joan Sykes the new ladies captain every success over the coming year. I must also wish Colin Whitaker and Terry Robinson every success as this year’s captains of the old salts and mid-weekers.
Although Christmas is just around the corner and shorter days mean there’s less time to enjoy playing golf, your membership of the club still provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy events inside the clubhouse. As well as simply meeting with friends and using the club’s bar and other facilities, I urge you to take the opportunity to support the programme of social events being planned by Jack Dale and his social committee.
At the recent AGM, there was a good turn out and I was pleased to sense that members are generally supportive of what the board and committee are doing on their behalf. However the past year hasn’t been easy and the workload associated with managing the club has increased significantly. Unlike almost every other golf club in the country, we are totally reliant on a small number of volunteers to run our club, and this approach presents serious difficulties when replacements cannot be found. Although we will continue to need volunteers, the imminent retirements of Brian Best and Mel Bashford, presents the opportunity for change and your board is actively considering how funding to employ a club manager or secretary might be included in next year’s budgets.
I am pleased to say we do have two new Directors following the AGM; I welcome Bob Ireland and Rob Mumby onto the board and look forward to their input during the coming year. Bob Ireland has kindly agreed to take over from John Clarke as our Premises Director, whilst Rob Mumby has agreed to stay on the Board and assist with the modernisation of our Club Rules and Articles of Association. These provide the framework necessary for managing our business in an efficient and effective way and it’s important they are relevant and as easy to understand as possible. If at all possible the new versions of these documents will be available prior to April next year for members to consider and hopefully approve.
The club’s financial position at the end of March 2021, was better than expected, due largely to government covid related grants and the associated 100% reduction on business rates. When considering budgets for the current year, your board decided we would fix renewal rates for 2021 membership at the 2020 levels. To support this decision, it was necessary to assume membership numbers would remain stable and take an optimistic view on income likely from; the bar, green-fees and club-house hire. The jury is out concerning whether we achieve our financial targets this year and we are doing all we reasonably can to maximise income and keep costs under control. It’s likely that membership fees will have to increase next year, though your board will do all it can to keep the increase within acceptable limits. I am confident the new rates will still provide excellent value for money and be more affordable than fees at most other clubs.

Sunday 14 November – Captains’ Drive-In
12 Days of Christmas Raffle: This is coming very soon with some amazing prizes. Please see the board near the bar and write your names on the squares. Each square cost £1 and you need to pay the bar staff as you write your name up. The profits from the raffle this year go to club funds so please do support it as best you can if only by spreading the word when you are in the Clubhouse.
Saturday 11 December – Festive Evening: Steve Sage is going to be hosting a festive evening for a £5 contribution to Club funds. Please watch the social board for a sign-up list. A massive thank you to Steve from the social committee for his contribution.
Sunday 12 December – Christmas Lunch Please sign up to the list on the social board and pre-order your Christmas lunches. The price is £20 for two courses or £25 for three courses. There are a variety of options for all courses.
There will be staggered serving times, so it is imperative to the running of the event that you check your times carefully and are seated ready.
This looks to be a good Christmas lunch offering that as members of the club, you can book tables for you and any guests wish to bring. We hope to have some background entertainment which we hope adds to a great atmosphere.
Saturday 18 December – Kids Party: We will be charging £10 per head for each child that signs up on the social board. All children must be between the ages of 2 and 8 years old. Father Christmas will be coming and there will be some added fun extras for the children to enjoy including a snow machine. The time for the event will be between 3pm and 5pm. It would be great to see everyone attending in some festive clothing!
Sunday 19 December – Adults Party: Please sign up on the list on the social board. The event will run from 2:30pm to 8pm. The cost per head will be £10 to include a disco, turkey rolls at lunchtime and some nibbles in the evening.
31 December – New Years’ Eve: THIS IS A TICKETED EVENT, BUY YOUR TICKETS FOR £10 BEHIND THE BAR. First come, first serve so don’t miss out! Rather than a formal meal, we are looking to have a party and dance the night away for our New Year celebration. Please have your evening meal before your come as there will only be a light buffet and snacks on offer during the evening. Please arrive from 6.30pm.

I would also like to produce The Tidings as a hard copy, if anyone has any suggestions as to how this could be financed please let me know. I think the budget figure for 100 copies per month would be in the region of £2,000 per annum, which works out at around £6.50 per member per year, not a lot to ask for such a prestigious document!

Captain Rob Mumby
October blew through in fine fashion with the first event being the Committee Cup contested on October 3rd. Some very good scores were recorded on a pleasant autumnal day.
The results of the top three were:
John Perkins 1st – nett 63
Neil Edmonds 2nd – nett 64
Lloyd Foster 3rd – nett 65.
It was however, enough for Lloyd in 3rd place to clinch the Committee cup on the combined points accrued through the season. Well done Lloyd.
Despite some early hiccups, the Dinner Dance took place at the clubhouse on the 16th October and was well supported by our members. The marvellously tasty fish and chip supper was provided by Ossies Fish Bar, and the live music came from the jazz quartet ‘The Dukes of Swing’ kept us dancing till closing.
Many thanks to all those who attended and supported the Club on the night.
The medal winners medal followed the next day 17th October and was won in admirable fashion by Ron Rumball with a nett 60 including five birdies.
This is my last Tidings post as Captain. Thank you all who have supported me as Captain in the various matches, challenges and events. Thank-you also to your support of my charity The Air Ambulance this year. Let’s hope none of us need it.

And finally a big thanks to Jon Perkins as my Vice Captain. His unwavering support has proved invaluable and I hope his year at the helm is equally rewarding. Looking forward to his Captains Drive-in on the 14th November.

On Thursday 21st October the ladies held their Annual Supper and Presentation Evening, and a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all and it was especially lovely to see some who are no longer able to play join us along a few recent new members. Unfortunately our guests from Chestfield were unable to attend this year.
During the evening Sue and Pat organised a quiz which had some interesting answers and kept everyone amused during the meal.

The first action of October was the second of two annual matches against the ladies. On a blustery day Old Salts managed to win the trophy by around 40 points.The best individual score was by Gwyn ‘ five iron’ Oakley with 38 points.
Friendly four balls were played on the 7th so no Captain’s Challenge.
A Five Club Stableford competition sponsored by John Wegner was played on the 14th, the winner was Robbie Fudge with 40 points, 2nd was David Morgan with 39 points and 3rd was Brian Daw with 37 points. Nearest the pin in two on the 9 / 18 was David Rigden.
Around forty players battled the very strong winds in a popular Texas Scramble on the 21st October, the final scores were close as usual. The winners were , Rod Whitehead , Denis Smith , Anthony Trevett and Malcolm ‘Pancho’ Cane with 55 points ( shot allowance 16).
The last round of Pete’s 3 from 6 medal competition was played on the 28th October , the result was close, in 3rd place was Vice Captain Colin Whitaker with a net 68 (gross 82) in 2nd place on count back Mick Wyles net 66 (gross 81) in 1st place was Brian Ridley net 66 (gross 79)
The final Captain’s Challenge of Peter Smith’s tenure was apparently a tester, as Captain Peter Smith and Vice Colin Whitaker were pushed hardby David Goldhill and Nicholas Schoon but finished 3 and 2 winners.
Finally on behalf of all Old Salts a big thank you to Peter Smith for his dedication and representation as Captain during what has been a very difficult playing year.

As we gradually get back to normal after the turmoil of the last 18 months, the section is back up and running with both social golf and 2 competitions a month.
It is noticeable, however, that numbers are down on pre covid times, so a push is needed to try and swell the numbers playing, this section is open to all and there is no joining fee so to anyone interested get your name down and come and join us. Although the booking system has some advantages there are also some draw backs one of which is casual golf where we turn up at 8am put the balls in a hat and draw them randomly, giving players the chance to mix with different members, to counteract this it has been agreed that periodically the names on the computer list will be shuffled, this will take place on the occasional Monday so you need to be aware of this, you will have booked in on a certain time but this may not be your start time.
The Mid Weeker’s charity night was its normal success, involving several turns and music from the inhouse band, a sum in excess of £1500 was raised for captain Terry’s Dementia charity.
Competition wise the October stableford was won by Michael Cousins with 35 points, second was David Tassell with 34 points and third Trevor Croxton on count back.
The Ray Thomas Cup was won by Simon (Biggles)Rutherford with 40 points second was Ian Moys with 38 points and third Andy Short on 36 points.
Next was the Midweeker’s Captains charity day first was Geoffrey Holland on 38 points second Ian Moys on 35 points and third Patrick Mooney on 34 points this was a heavily reduced field owing to the weather conditions.
The final competition of October was the Dave Rosendale Sorcerers cup, first was Michael Harris with 39 points, second was William McArthur on 37 points and third was Ian Heywood on 35 points. I believe this was Micky Harris’s first foray into a Midweekers competition so well done Michael.
The next competition will be the Tudor Tea Rooms Trophy on the 10th of November so get your names down when it comes on line. Finally, things in the club house have settled into a smoother routine with a new bar manager Chris and the kitchen able to provide sustenance on a regular basis so these facilities need your support.
