Friday 6th April Easter Egg Hunt
This was a great day for the children with around 20 excited kids turning the club and course upside down in search of their quarry. Leading the hunt was a large chicken concealing Junior vice captain Richard Smith! Thanks must also go to a couple of bunnies Amy Bills and Emma Thomas as well as the enthusiastic support of Mel and John!

Monday 2nd. April saw Whitstable & Seasalter Old Salts travelling to Walmer & Kingsdown for their second away match of the season. The result was disappointing with the Old Salts being beaten 61/2 to 11/2. Whitstable & Seasalter are expecting better results when they get to play on their home course, a challenge for any visiting team.
On Thursday 5th. April The Old Salts played their first trophy competition, the Ken Vickers Trophy Stableford. A cold wind blew across the course making play difficult but this did not stop some good scores. In third place was Tony Bensted with 36 points, second place went to Barry Broadbent with 37, but outstanding play by a very in form John Shepherd secured him the trophy.
The Captain (Brian Best) partnered by George Bawden played John Dowle and Colin Satchwell in the Captain’s Challenge. The result was decided on the 18th. green when the Challengers went 1 up.
The final result for the Old Salts Brian’s six of the best competition are as follows;
1st. Brian Daw 7 points
2nd Dave Morgan, David Dale, Sid Silk, Tommy Burns all on 3 points
3rd. Brian Best, Barry Broadbent, Brian Ridley all on 1 point
Results of the Winter Eclectic are :- 1st Peter Steigmann with a net 51, Dave Morgan 2nd with 52 and John Whorlow 52.5 comes third.
The complete leader board can be perused in the club house for those of a morbid disposition!

The Juniors started their Monday night practice sessions on the 28th March but due to some administrative errors and a printer failure some juniors were left in the dark!
Professional Bob Charlton was on hand, assisted by Martin Newton and John Williams, to give the juniors some much needed tuition.
Two new members were registered Jack who is 8 and Mia who is 13.
Saturday 7th April the Monthly Medal was held and won by Jack Dale with Richard Smith second and Marijka Rapley coming third.

On March 27th Shirley Rosser showed that she doesn’t need all the clubs in her bag by winning the KCPFA Five club competition with 38 points! This allows her to go through to the next round at Mid Kent. Mel Bashford was second with 36 points and third was Debbie Murray with 34.
Mary King, Beryl Wingrove and Val Bayliss visited Mid Kent to play in the Taplin Trophy, where they received a very warm welcome. The weather was excellent and the course in good condition. Only Mary won her match so our ladies will go no further this year.
On a beautiful sunny and warm day, a treat at the end of March, a ladies team played an away game at North Foreland. Memorable for handmade biscuits before playing and huge baked potatoes and portions of cake after the game, the play in between was less memorable; Beryl Wingrove came closest to a win with a halved match. The final result being 6½ to ½.
April’s Medal round was won by Mel Bashford with a net 66, closely followed by Penny Perkins with 67 and Margaret Barker with 68.
The Stableford on April 10th was won by Val Bayliss with 40 points, followed by Jackie Witten on 39 and Joyce Jaynes with 35.
The match against St Augustines on the 13th April was halved.
On April 17th The Spring Greensomes drawn pairs (high and low handicaps) was played in dreadful conditions resulting in a win for the weather-9 holes only being played.
Fran Price and Mel Bashford won with an admirable 16 points on count back from Margaret Annal and Helen Gurney. Linda Bawden and Jane Austen managed 14 points.
The National Nines competition was played at home against stiff opposition from Reigate Heath. Sadly our girls came second!
Mary Kling was accepted to play in the EWGA Annual Medal competition at Highgate on the 20th . Pat Bensted kindly went in support but sadly Mary was not the winner.
In the Centenary Bowl played on 21st April the leading ladies were Debbie Murray and Sheila Wyles both with 34 points – Debbie winning on count back.
April 22nd saw the Medal winners trophy played for in threatening weather and as the storm broke, the ladies scuttled for shelter and watched as the 9th green became whitye with hailstones. As consolation the cakes that had been prepared for tea were consumed which made the afternoon seem worthwhile. A repeat performance was booked for the following Sunday but the weather won again, the course being closed due to torrential rain (drought what drought)?
On the 28th eight ladies went to Sheerness for a friendly match, which turned out to be a very wind blown affair, most participants accepting that it was the strongest wind they had ever played in. Luckily there wasn’t too much rain a few brief squalls scudding through. It was an exhausted band of golfers that returned to the clubhouse at the end of the day with Whitstable bringing up the rear again. We intend to do better soon!
The results of the Winter Competitions have been announced Linda Bawden won the Knockout and Pat Bensted won the eclectic.
The coffee morning on the 7th was a great success raising £500 a worthwhile result for a lot of effort from all, well done!

April Report
2010 Club Captain Steve Rumball, achieved his ambition of winning a major club competition when he scooped the Past Captains’ Skinner Trophy event earlier this month. His 38 points score put him three points clear and an easy winner ahead of runner up John Clarke.
A Stableford competition played on the same day as the Skinner Trophy, saw John Whorlow finish winner with 39 points ahead of Brian Wild and Andy Sargeant.
The clubs annual centenary trophy, for all sections of the club, was played for on 21st April. Unlike last year, when the competition was won by a Junior, winning positions on this occasion were dominated by the men’s section. Andy Watkins finished as overall winner with an amazing 44points, ahead of Jack Scott. Jack must have thought he had done enough when he ended his round with an impressive 42 points but he had to settle for the runner up slot once again. Des Barker took third place with 39 points ahead of Derek Bates who lost out on count back.

Tuesday 17th found the Vets team at Broome Park on a terrible day weather wise, heavy rain ruined the day and the match was eventually abandoned when most teams had reached the ninth. Shame really as we were ahead in the majority of games! Still there is always the return to look forward to.
On the same day The Association of Kent Veteran Golfers held their first meeting at Sittingbourne, again the weather was foul in the morning but the leisurely pace of the Vets ensured that the weather had time to improve by the afternoon! Several members of WASGC were present and indeed featured in the prizes.
The results of The Desmond Barker Trophy were – Division 1 (up to 18 handicap) 1st M Wyles WASGC 37 points, 2nd A Fagg Princes 35 points, 3rd J Hampshire, The Ridge 34 points.
Division 2 (19-28 Handicap) results 1st A Loader, Dartford 36 points (on count back), 2nd P Halligan, Langley Park 36 points, 3rd N Tubman Hemsted Forest 35 points.
Nearest the pin 4th B Morgan Wrotham Heath, 7th R Hope, North Foreland, 11th J Gardner, Lullingstone Park, 15th D Fransham, Redlibbets.
An excellent carvery meal was enjoyed by all and we all look forward to the next meeting on Monday 21st May at Faversham where the SAGA Trophy will be contested.

Wednesday 11th April The Peter West Cup.
The Captains Challenge was a good contest resulting in a 4 and 3 victory for the Captain and Vice who both played well enough to win but not well enough to come in the prizes!
Martin Newton and Ted Backhouse didn’t quite gel together but the day was an enjoyable one and several shandy’s were consumed later.
The result of the competition was a win for Gary Hartley-Trigg with a net score of 62 after count back, second with net 62 John Fullager and 3rd Tony Lavender with 65.
Friday April 27th The Kenny Bills April Cup
Captain’s challenge was played, the usual suspects against Dave Morgan and Eric Rochester, the weather was fair but a bit blowy, at the halfway mark we were 3 up and faced with the retirement of Eric with severe arthritis in his hand. Dave struggled manfully on, alone but we managed to win on the 15th, 4 and 3.
Bob Ireland went on to win the day with 39 points, second was Dave Chalk on 36 points with Eynon Price in the frame with 35 on count back.
Charity sweep winners were John Fullager first and Bob Ireland 3rd. No-one had second place so that is a rollover until next time.
Attendance awards were presented to Dave Atkins with 50, Ray Thomas with 150 and Kenny Bills with a staggering 250 appearances.

To be eligible to play for the Super Seniors see below:- The Super Seniors League is one of three run under the auspices of the Society of Kent Golf Veterans. Age requirement is to be aged 70 or over and to play off a 21 handicap or better. Whitstable are in League C, comprising for this season of Broome Park, Canterbury, North Foreland and, Chestfield (a new entrant this year after St Augustine’s dropped out at the end of last season) and ourselves. There is and end-of-season play-off with group A and B usually around mid-September. But no worries, we never aspire to such grandiose exposure Dress for all games is informal afterwards, with a bite and a coffee normally a fiver before tee-off, usually at 1pm. Team requirement is now eight players with notices posted on the Kent Vets notice board in good time for the next match. Q. A player’s ball goes into a bunker by the side of the 6th green. The player accidentally kicks a fallen apple into the bunker. The player picks up the apple, which is not interfering with his stance or the area of his intended swing. Does he incur a penalty?
Answer
Yes. An apple is a loose impediment and may not be removed when both the impediment and the ball lie in a hazard (rule 13-4c). By removing the apple from the bunker, the player incurs a penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play for breach of rule 13-4c
