First of all I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for making the captain’s drive in a very successful and memorable day. On a Personal note it’s a day my family and I will never forget.

Results of the Winter eclectic on Thursday November 7 were: Colin Holton first on 39 points, with Kit Ryan, Robbie Fudge and the doughty Ron Fuller all on 38 pts. Clive Witten came home with 36 pts. After the game Vice-Captain Ian Wingrove’s first official task of the new season was to present young Henry Kernighan with the Seasalter Cup as Henry was unable to attend the Club Annual Dinner to accept his trophy.
The first drawn game in Captain George Bawden’s year was a great success and many of the Salts look forward to the next game in this popular format. The greensomes game, played in rousing weather, although not wet, saw Peter Steigmann and close mate John Shepherd just pip Gwyn Oakley and Mike Moore to the post with 37 points, while the Oakley/Moore partnership notched 36, the same as third place David Annal and Mike Harrison.
Next up on the Salts calendar was the game on the 21st that mostly saw no more than seven holes played by those hardy enough to go out. Heavy rain and wind proved too much for most of the field, with our gallant leaders George and Ian playing on after the turn but saying ‘enough’ after 13 holes. They skidded to a halt only when their Captain’s Challenge game with the powerful John Wegner/Tony Bensted duo ended with an eight and seven defeat. But the pairing of Gwyn Oakley and David Kinnersley saw it through to the bitter end with waterproof Gwyn bettering his handicap by a shot! David did not relish the conditions as much and after a below par stint retired to his home for a Vick chest rub from Penny.
The last Thursday game of the month was to have been a qualifier but because of some holes played off mats etc. ended up as a Winter Eclectic. Improving Ryn Hudson came in with the best score of the day with 39 points for the Gentlemen, just edging out born-again Player Ian Wingrove who, still battered from the eight and seven pounding last week, carded a very respectable 38. Fred Stokes got third place overall on countback from Bob McCormick, both on 37. For the Gentlemen John Shepherd again got into the frame with 34 (is this his swansong?) John Williams was third in the Gentlemen category with 32.
The Captain’s Challenge saw a great win for the senior duo. George and the back to form Ian Wingrove saw off the two young upstarts Gwyn Oakley and new Competitions Secretary Brian Ridley by an impressive four and three.

Ladies Section-November 2013
Despite dropping temperatures and wetter conditions the ladies section have had a busy month both on and off the course.
The first competition of the month-the first of the Christmas Competitions-had to be cancelled due to awful weather. A few of the more intrepid ladies did venture out for 9 holes as it seemed defeatist not to do anything-and the alternative of ironing and housework was even less appealing!
The following Tuesday followed a very wet weekend and so while play did go ahead in the Christmas Competition it was decided to change it to a 9 hole comp. It was a cold and wet morning and 5 temporary greens made the conditions even trickier.
The ladies AGM followed golf and was well attended by more than 40 playing lady members. Linda Bawden started her year as Lady Captain with Beryl Wingrove as her Vice. Sheila Wyles took over from the long-standing Mary Calthrop as Competition Secretary and outgoing committee members Sally Lawson and Jackie Witten were replaced by Louise Tucker and Judy Butcher.
The drive-in mid month was, as always, an excellent afternoon. Jackie Witten officially handed over the mantle to Linda Bawden who recorded a longest drive of 146 yards. The event was very well supported by members and their friends and family and as usual the ladies did not disappoint with the food they provided for the buffet.
The next round of the Christmas Competition was played in slightly better conditions-cold but sunny and no temporary greens. 25 ladies completed 9 holes (which is now all that is required for the purposes of the comp) but some of the braver ones battled on to do 18. Holly Butler had the best 9 hole score of 16 stableford points followed by Shirley Dalton and Louise Tucker both on 15.
The final Tuesday of the month saw another round of the 9 hole Christmas Competition. Mary King romped home with the best score of a 25 strong field with a magnificent 20 points, closely followed by Penny Perkins with 19 and Holly Butler with 17.
There is 1 round of this competition remaining, to be played on the first Tuesday of December, with the best 3 scores from 4 rounds counting.
Ladies social golf is set to continue through the Winter on Thursday afternoons at 1-30pm-see Mary Calthrop for details or just turn up and play.
The ladies would like to remind everyone that their annual Christmas Coffee Morning is coming up on Saturday 7th December between 11.00 am and 12.30pm. All are welcome to attend and join in-there will be stalls, games, competitions and prizes. This is also the last day for ladies to pay for their Christmas lunch which is on Tuesday 10th December following a Pink Ball Competition. £11-00 for a 2 course Christmas meal and accompanying carols and festive spirit which money cannot buy.
And finally the Ladies section is thinking of starting up a choir-just for fun, no previous experience necessary, no vocal talent particularly necessary. If anybody is interested in becoming the Musical Director, or has piano playing skills, please make yourself known. Or if you know a budding Gareth Malone……

Golf Report for Sunday mornings – Oct / Nov
Mark Pearce completed one of his best ever rounds to finish winner of the October Medal. His net 59 score was three shots clear of runners up Ted Henderson, John Stokes and David Bowman. Having already qualified for the medal winners’ cup, Mark was poised to do well and didn’t disappoint. In difficult conditions he managed a respectable net 66 one shot clear of the rest of the field. Jon Whorlow (winner of this year’s committee cup) finished in second place.
This year’s Turkey Trot started with Glenn Snook finishing easy winner of the first round. His 43 points put him in a strong position, five clear of his nearest rival Brian Wild, with two rounds to play. The second round saw Ronnie Rumball set down his challenge with 38 points but Glen hung on to his overall lead with his 33point second round score. Andy Gremo dropped only one shot to par to finish clear winner of the third round with 39 points. Ronnie finished with another 38points but Glenn did just enough and his 35 points in the final round gave him a two point lead for the overall win.

Wednesday 13th November The Tudor Tearooms Trophy Stableford
What a difficult day for golf, weather not great but nevertheless Roy Lee triumphed over all opposition with an excellent 37 points, second on 34, Brian McNally and third Ian Burton on 32.
Brian was also fortunate to draw Roy in the charity sweep, second was Colin Horton and third Trevor Croxton. Birdie prizes were awarded to Peter Shearing, Mike Harrison, Colin Holton and Roy Keohane.
Friday 22nd November The Vic Green Shield Stableford
It was a cold, wet and miserable morning as I drove into the car park to see the first of the Midweekers finishing their rounds for the Vic Green Trophy, rain dripping from their faces. It’s at times like these that I’m glad I’m still getting over my hernia operation. Once the last of the golfers thawed out in the clubhouse, I announced the results. The winner with 36points was the evergreen John Fullager, in 2nd place with 36 points Don Williams and 3rd with 34 points Roy Lee. Roy had a particularly good morning as apart from coming 3rd he also scored a hole in one on the 4th and to cap it all picked his own name in the charity sweep. Well done Roy. There was no Captains Challenge as myself and my Vice Bob are still out injured (what a start to the season). However when we are both fit again golf challengers beware. Be afraid be very afraid.

Super Seventies Organiser and Captain Alec Parrett
Good news as we expand into something even more appealing to Seasalter Seniors.
Fellow League C club Broome Park have broken new ground and agreed a date for the Broome Park Open for Super Seniors. The date for your diary is, at present, Tuesday August 19 with a noon tee- off and a two-tee start.
Final details have still to be sorted and take-up to be monitored, but it is planned to have teams of three with a host from Broome Park to show the way round! There will be a running buffet afterwards with prize giving about 5.30pm. Maximum handicap is to be 24.
BP say that this will be the first over-70 competition in Kent and believe that it would be nice to see other clubs staging their own opens.
Broome Park are happy to give preference to teams from the Super Seniors leagues, but also want to encourage local clubs to enter as well. They await a show of interest, and depending on take-up envisage sending out the formal stuff in late February or early March.

Happily for us, visitors next year to Collingwood Road to play our Seniors should find it harder, as the 21 minimum handicap limit is to be raised to 24, giving a Whitstable high handicapper even more of a start on his home course. Or so the theory goes.
Elsewhere, Broome Park are intending to arrange an Open competition for over -70’s, probably in late August or early September, 2014. There will be teams of three and it is hoped to encourage other clubs to try to do the same. More news later.
