The Old Salts Captain Brian Best Vice Captain Colin Chapman Secretary George Bawden
On Thursday 23rd. August Whitstable and Seasalter Old Salts played a qualifying medal competition for the Duncan Munro Trophy.
The weather was very conducive to good scoring, there being only a light breeze and plenty of sun. The extended dry conditions meant, however, that the greens were difficult to hold. Despite this some good scores were achieved. In third place on a count-back was Terry Suggett with a net three under par 63. In second place was John Whorlow also on 63. The worthy winner of the very fine trophy was Ryn Hudson with a net 61.
In the Captain’s Challenge Brian Daw and Ted Backhouse took on the Captain, Brian Best and his Vice captain, Colin Chapman. This match was a real “nail biter” going to the 18th green, where Colin sank a pressure putt to conclude the match all square.
Whitstable and Salter Old Salts retain the Kay Shield
On Wednesday 29th. August Whitstable and Seasalter Old Salts contested the Kay Shield. This is a very competitive fixture against St. Augustines. It consists of home and away matches played on the same day. As has been the pattern for most of this summer, Whitstable lost the away section three and five but won at home leg by five and a half to two and a half. This excellent home performance meant that the Old Salts triumphed and retain the Shield for a further year.
Thursday 30th. August saw the Old Salts playing a drawn Stableford competition in the Six of the Best series. The weather was quite windy but fortunately the rain held off until lunchtime allowing nearly all the field to complete their rounds in the dry. The placings were:
For the Gentlemen – 1st. Mike Harrison 39 pts.
2nd. Trevor Coombes 37
3rd. Brian Pratt 36
For the Players – 1st. Brian Daw 44 pts.
2nd. Michael Moore 43
3rd. Ian Wingrove 39

Saturday 1st September The Elsworthy Bowl.
Junior Captain Bradley Packham paired with his granddad Mick Wyles came in with an unbeatable 52 points, Marijka Rapley and Holly Butler were second with 41 points and third with 40 were Jack Dale and Tony Bensted, the results of the drug test on Bradley(Tiger)Packham are yet to be seen!
Our grateful thanks are given to Janet and Tony Henley for the prizes and excellent tea enjoyed afterwards.
Diary Date
On Saturday October 6th Junior Captains Day, please give Bradley your support, the future of our club rests with these young golfers!
Ladies Section Captain Mel Bashford, Vice Captain Jackie Witten
Secretary Jean Hudson
August 2012
A good start to the month with a match halved against Westgate on the 3rd. On the 7th a stableford was played, with the immediate past captain, Mary King, taking first place with 35 points, followed by Penny Perkins on 33,on countback from Holly Butler.
Mary also shone the next day, winning the Past Captains trophy, when there were ten contestants. Tea followed with non-playing past Captains invited.
On the 14th, a medal competition was played. This year’s Captain, Mel, was the victor with a net 64.As a result, her handicap, which had slipped inexplicably to 19, shot back down to 17. Next was Stella Lakin with 68,then Chris Chapman with 70.
A team travelled to play at the Ridge, on the same day as the Old Salts. Our result is best forgotten, however, a good opportunity to play a lovely course.
In the Texas Scramble held on the 21st, the trio of Inge Parry, Penny Perkins and Holly Butler won, with 64.9, followed by Pat Bensted, Linda Bawden and Jackie Witten,64.1.
The Captain vs Vice-captain competition was held on the 22nd. This was played as a 4-ball better ball, with the 28 players competing in drawn pairs. Despite some valiant efforts, Jackie Witten had to concede victory to her Captain. The outcome was 8-6 to Mel’s team. Buttery teacakes followed, which made it all worthwhile.
The last Bank Holiday mixed greensomes of the year was, yet again, a very jolly occasion. With a record field of 44,super food and prizes, the competition was held in the usual good spirit and maintained the reputation of being a successful social occasion. The prizewinners gave Mary Calthrop, who did the cards, a headache, as it was all countbacks. First were Ian and Beryl Wingrove, with 44 points, beating Desmond and Margaret Barker. Then on 43 points each, third were George and Linda Bawden, beating Mick and Sheila Wyles. Judy Butcher and David Dale won the front nine prize, and Sue Pout and Mike Behr, the second nine.
The following day therefore was a challenge for some heavy heads, the winner of the stableford was Val Bayliss, 38 pts, the Holly Butler, 35, and Helen Foad, 34.
The last day of the month was Ladies Invitation Day, with an entry of 36. The format was Joint stableford, with nearest the pin, etc. Mel organised a prize table, which transformed the conservatory area into a virtual greenhouse, with lovely herbs in baskets offered as prizes. So this encouraged everyone to give it their best shot, literally! Overall, the best shots came from the pairing of Janet Henley with her guest, Ann Slaughter, from Bearsted, with joint74 points, who just pipped Val Brown and her guest Jean Clode (Chestfield),73 ,then it was Helen Foad and Maggie Reeves ( Chestfield),72. Jackie Witten and Pat Boyce ( Chestfield ) won the first nine prize, (36); Penny Perkins and Annette Stringer ( Chestfield) took the back nine prize. There was a prize for the best overall card which went to Helen Foad, with 40 points. What a week for her!!!
Nearest the pin for visitors was won by Maggie Reeves ,on the 4th,and Pat Boyce on the 15th .The “ twos “ prize went to Annette Stringer, £ 34 in total, as there were no other takers! Voted to have been a very successful day, with a lovely running buffet provided by Tony. Congratulations, Mel.
Men’s Section Captain John Wegner, Vice Captain Richard Gremo
Sunday Morning Report
The Frend Cup ended with the Club Captain John Wegner finishing outright winner on 40 points. His very tidy round included eight pars and two birdies helped him finish one point clear of the rest of the filed. Three players shared the runner up positions on 39 points and second place with the best back nine ended in second place ahead of Jack Scott and John Whorlow.
Andy Selwood finished with a brilliant net 61 in the Harry Johnson Cup to finish as the clear winner. Despite four dropped shots on the first five holes, Andy finished strongly to end a shot clear of runners up Richard Davis and Tony Petts who both finished on net 62.
Perfect weather resulted in spectacular scores from the leading group of players in this month’s August Medal. Tommy Burns made the most of benign conditions to finish with a net 57 ahead of the improving Stuart Moore. Stuart must have thought his net 58 would be good enough but dropped shots on each of the last two holes ended his chance of his first major competition win. Classy Jack Scott will also have thought he had done enough after he ended with a superb one under par gross score to finish on 59. Although this proved to be the best scratch score on the day, in form Micky Milner also finished with net 59 and managed to sneak third place on count back.
Midweekers Section Captain Bob Ireland Vice Captain Peter Shearing
Secretary Peter Fox
Wednesday 8th August Ted Backhouse Rosebowl.
The Captains challenge against Tom Burns and Jon Aldridge was won by the challengers 4 and 3, the captain and vice thoroughly disillusioned retired to the bar.
The competition was won by Brian McNally with a wonderful net 62, second was Roy Lee net 64 and third Tom Burns net 64 losing on countback.
Bob McCormick, Ray Thomas, Ian Horton and Tom Burns collected birdie prizes.
There was no winner of first prize in the charity sweep, second was John Williams and third Des Barker.
Friday 24th August The Tony Sait August Shield.
Captains challenge between the usual suspects v Albert Adams and John Rainey, the usual suspects triumphing 4 and 3 despite spirited play by Albert and John.
The winner of the day was Dave Swann with a magnificent 46 points, followed by Des Barker with 41 beating Dave Chalk into third place on countback.
Birdies were sadly lacking with only three, Des Barker, Tom Burns and Ray Emmerson. Charity sweep was won by Ernie West, second P McDonnell and third Peter Shearing.
Attendance prizes are due to Dave Atkins for 50 and Steve Chambers 100. (Long time no see at Midweekers events guys!)
The summer eclectic competition has now finished the winner was Tom Burns with 53.5, second Bob Ireland with 55.5 and third Dave Chalk with 56, presentation of prizes will take place after the Wren Cup on Wednesday 12th September.
Super Seventies
Secretary Alec Parrett
The Super Seniors are gearing up for their last League C match at Foreland on September 13. It is a vital game to remain just off the bottom of the league, as Whitstable paid the penalty of a couple of poor away results at Chestfield and Broome Park early in August.
Currently we have 31 points, just ahead of newcomers Chestfield on 26, with one match each still to play. Both North Foreland and Canterbury also have a game each still to play. So it looks very tight as a total of 12 points are up for grabs and Alec Parrett is honing his very best team to try to bring home some vital points. Last year we were bottom by one point to St Augustine’s, who have now left the league. We would rather it didn’t happen again.
Canterbury play Chestfield at home on September 11. North Foreland of course have set their hats at taking the league after getting maximum point from us and going on to the playoffs against the A and B League winners later this year.
The League C table is below.
League table at Played Home Away Games
31-Aug-12 Pts H A W D L W D L W D L

September13……………………….Away to North Foreland.
To be eligible to play for the Super Seniors see below:- The Super Seniors League is one of three run under the auspices of the Society of Kent Golf Veterans. Age requirement is to be aged 70 or over and to play off a 21 handicap or better. Whitstable are in League C, comprising for this season of Broome Park, Canterbury, North Foreland and, Chestfield (a new entrant this year after St Augustine’s dropped out at the end of last season) and ourselves. There is and end-of-season play-off with group A and B usually around mid-September. But no worries, we never aspire to such grandiose exposure Dress for all games is informal afterwards, with a bite and a coffee normally a fiver before tee-off, usually at 1pm. Team requirement is now eight players with notices posted on the Kent Vets notice board in good time for the next match. If anyone has any questions about the Super Seniors, please contact organiser Alec Parrett, on 01843 600887 or by email at alvipar@talktalk.net.

Beachcomber
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep.
Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: “Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you see.”
Watson replied: “I see millions and millions of stars.”
Holmes said: “and what do you deduce from that?”
Watson replied: “Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like earth out there. And if there are a few planets like earth out there, there might also be life.”
And Holmes said: “Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.”
